On St. Nick's Day, the Faculty of Organization and Management hosted yet another annual Corning Day at the Building of the Three Faculties. This theme of year's event referred to fiber optics that connects the world. In Polish, the theme offers an interesting play on the word światłowód as its first five letters the word 'world' (świat).

As has become the tradition, the organization was carried out collaboratively by Corning Optical Communications Poland, Lodz University of Technology, and its students, in particular, those active in the Fiber Optics Club section of the Student Science Circle of Junior Engineers of Microelectronics. Much excitement was generated by the street game, where students visited 10 'countries' arranged at the Faculties of Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, EEIA, FTIMS, and OiZ.

Corning Day was officially opened in the Faculty of OiZ. TUL Vice-Rector for Development, prof. Paweł Strumiłło, referred to the history of Corning's rise to global leadership in more than just fiber optic technology, and expressed appreciation of the nearly 10 years of wide-ranging cooperation with TUL.

Next, Łukasz Srogosz, plant manager of Corning Optical Communications in Stryków, spoke of the way Corning connects TUL students with the world of business. The highlight of the opening was a lecture by Anna Kaczuba on The supply chain that connects the world just like a fiber optic cable. An seasoned manager and long-time practitioner, she introduced the students to the topic of the supply chain and local and global issues that affect the effectiveness of Corning Plant operations and production.

Dr inż. Mateusz Łakomski, member of the TUL's Department of Semiconductor and Optoelectronic Devices and lecturer on fiber optic technologies, presented a set of electives offered in the Electronics and Telecommunications degree program. One of them, Automation of Fiber Optic Measurements, is taught at Corning laboratories. The block is much enjoyed by those students who early on in their education join the Fiber Optics section of the Young Engineers of Microelectronics. Krzysztof Pęczek, a third-year student of Electronics and Telecommunications, member of the Student Science Circle, talked about the research on fiber optic sensors conducted by the Circle.  

The first part of the Corning Day program concluded with presentations by Corning staff, graduates from Lodz University of Technology, who described to their younger colleagues the trajectory of their careers, from studying at Lodz University of Technology to their adventure of working for Corning.

After the refreshments and networking, the time came for the street game. Students thoroughly enjoyed getting into the nitty-gritty of technical details with experienced employees as well as talking to the company's more junior workers.
