The Defence and Security Research Centre (CBOB) of Lodz University of Technology was established in 2022.
The main tasks of the centre include:

presentation of the research potential of Lodz University of Technology in the field of defence and security,

initiating and supporting research activities in Lodz University of Technology in the field of defence and security,

organisation of cooperation with other research centres in the country and in the world to jointly implement research projects in the field of defence and security,
-
organisation of cooperation with governmental agendas, including the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Development and Technology, the European Defence Agency (EDA), the relevant agendas of NATO, ESA and the European Union in the field of defence and security programmes,
-
organisation of cooperation with industry, including defence companies and other defence and security units,
-
organisation and implementation of research and technical and training services in the field of defence and security.
The Defence and Security Research Centre is supported by an Advisory Board. It consists of representatives of all faculties of the University.
The Defence and Security Research Center seeks, supports and encourages collaborative research teams interested in defence and security research and development work. The application for cooperation should include a concise description of the project, its current level of technological readiness, estimated turnaround time for the development of a technology demonstrator.
Lodz University of Technology, in September 2022, established the Hawk Alliance of Security and Defence Research Centres of civilian technical universities together with Warsaw University of Technology and Silesian University of Technology. The Alliance represents civilian technical universities before government and military bodies, both national and international, to coordinate defence research programs and to support the cooperation of affiliated universities in the creation of interdisciplinary research teams.
The Hawk Alliance:

undertake activities leading to the development and development of an effective integrated research system in the field of defence and security,

support existing and create new forms of scientific and technical cooperation between research teams, industry and end-users at home and abroad, including organisations such as EDA, NATO, the European Commission,

conducts dialogue and cooperation with other actors involved in research and teaching processes in the field of defence and security,

define and identify the most important objectives for education and research in the field of defence and security arising from the need of the country and society that address the mission and strategy of technical universities.
Lodz University of Technology's current areas of research in defence and security work:
- innovative unmanned vessels,
- multispectral infrared techniques,
- textronics and smart materials,
- thin-film technologies,
- advanced information technologies,
- artificial intelligence.
