At a time when the question of a third dose of vaccine for all is on the table, research using advanced computer simulations and atomic force microscope has revealed more stable—and therefore more difficult to break—bindings of SARS-CoV-2 variants to receptors in our cells. Combined with the loss of affinity of some antibodies for variant spike proteins, these results beg the question of adapting the vaccine to the variants rather than administering a third dose of existing vaccines.

Dear all, employees, students and doctoral students of Lodz University of Technology

I have repeatedly expressed my wishes and, at the same time, my hidden desire to return to normal work, face-to-face education and to at least try to forget about the coronavirus threat as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the current situation does not make it possible to fulfil these wishes in full. The virus is still very aggressive, mutating and taking more lives.

A team of scientists headed by Prof. Tomasz Czyszanowski from the Institute of Physics, TUL, described the discovery of a new phenomenon involving the increase of optical power emitted by VCSEL lasers as a result of breaking their cylindrical symmetry. The latest issue of Nature Photonics recognizes the novelty and applicability of this discovery and dedicates to it an article from the News & Views series: "Asymmetry brings power boost".

A large part of society is already aware of how important a healthy diet is in our lives. However, we still have problems with the right choice of food and good quality products containing the so-called "good fats" that have a huge impact on our health. Researchers from the Institute of Food Technology and Analysis of Lodz University of Technology under the direction of Professor Grażyna Budryn have successfully taken up the challenge of implementing zero trans fats in the production of many types of food. New technologies and patents have been developed, making it possible, among other things, to produce the healthy sweet snacks that Prof. Budryn talks about.
