The Italian researcher is a noted specialist in computational electromagnetism and computer-aided design of electrical machines and wireless communication systems, particularly in automatic optimization methods. At his home university, he works at the Department of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering.

Professor Di Barba has close ties with Lodz University of Technology. He collaborates extensively with researchers from the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control engineering, including those of the Institute of Mechatronics and Information Systems and the Institute of Electronics. Since 2013, he has been a visiting professor at TUL, and has taught IFE students. The cooperation has produced dozens of collaboratively written JCR journal articles. Recently, two monographs have been published: one by Paolo Di Barba and Sławomir Wiak: MEMS: Field Models and Optimal Design, Springer 2020, and the other by Paolo Di Barba, Sławomir Wiak (eds.), Optimal Design Exploiting 3D Printing and Metamaterials, IET, 2021.

Professor Paolo Di Barba has authored or co-authored more than 200 research papers, presented at international conferences or published in international journals.

He is a member of the board of directors of the International Compumag Society, an important international forum for the electromagnetic community worldwide. Furthermore, he is chairman of the Steering Committee of the International Workshop on Optimization and Inverse Problems in Electromagnetism (OIPE), and co-editor of the IEEE Transactions on Magnetics - Conferences.

Professor Paolo Di Barba was granted the title of professor by order of the President of the Republic of Poland of 2021.
