Professor Edward Galas was born in Lubienia (Świętokrzyskie Province) on 2 January 1928. In 1955 he graduated from the Department of Food Chemistry at Lodz University of Technology. He did his doctoral studies at the Moscow Technological Institute of Food Industry between 1956 and 1960. After returning to Poland he was employed at Lodz University of Technology, where he obtained is post-doctoral degree (habilitation) in 1966. He was awarded the title of associate professor in 1973 and he became full professor in 1986.

Important functions:

  • at the University: Rector of Lodz University of Technology (1975-1981), Vice-Rector Research and Development (1972-1975), Dean of the Department of Food Chemistry (1970-1972), head of the newly established Department of Technical Biochemistry, the first department of biochemistry at Polish technical universities;
  • outside the University: member of the Polish Biochemical Society, Biochemistry and Biophysics Committee, Food Technology Committee as well as Biotechnology Committee at the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences, representative of Poland in the IUPAC commission on Biotechnology, founding member of the European Federation of Biotechnology (1978).
