Modern energy systems require not only new energy sources, but above all modern technologies, advanced materials, and innovative solutions. The only way to seize the opportunities arising from Poland’s upcoming energy transition is through close cooperation between science and industry. With these challenges in mind, an interdisciplinary research and technology centre for the energy sector—“Energy Science Boiler”—is being established at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the European Funds for Łódzkie 2021–2027 programme, Priority FELD.01 European Funds for an Innovative Łódzkie, Measure FELD.01.01 Public Research Infrastructure.
Thanks to this funding, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will significantly expand its capacity to conduct world-class scientific research and develop technologies for industry in cooperation with engineers from the energy sector. The project will create a space enabling research and development work—from concept development, through laboratory research, to preparing solutions for industrial implementation. It also includes equipping the Faculty with modern research infrastructure that will enable advanced studies on materials, devices, and technologies used in the energy sector.
Upgraded laboratories will support more advanced work in additive manufacturing (metal 3D printing), surface engineering, materials research, and analysis of structures and equipment operation. They will contribute to the development of new solutions for both conventional energy and renewable energy sources, addressing the needs of the energy transition and modern industry.
The “Energy Science Boiler” will serve as a hub for cooperation between scientists, entrepreneurs, and industrial partners. In partnership with companies, solutions will be developed to increase the efficiency of energy equipment, extend the lifespan of its components, and reduce operating costs and environmental impact.
The project includes the modernization of laboratory facilities, the purchase and commissioning of specialized research equipment, and the development of research staff competencies. The resulting infrastructure will be available to companies, research institutions, and partners carrying out R&D projects, strengthening the research and implementation potential of Lodz University of Technology and the entire region.
The total value of the project is nearly PLN 15.8 million, of which more than PLN 11 million comes from funding provided by the European Regional Development Fund. The project will be carried out from 16 July 2025 to 30 November 2028.
Project launch
On 3 July 2026, the first organizational meeting of the team responsible for implementing the project was held, with the participation of the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Jacek Sawicki. The participants discussed the schedule of activities, work organization, and principles of cooperation between the units involved in the project.
The meeting marked the beginning of the operational phase of the investment, which in the coming years will create a modern research base for science and industry at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
