From 5 to 10 July, the Alchemium building, home to the Faculty of Chemistry at Lodz University of Technology, hosted the 24th International Conference on Organic Synthesis (24-ICOS), one of the world’s most important scientific events devoted to organic synthesis, held under the auspices of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).

During the conference, Lodz University of Technology became a hub for presenting the latest scientific advances and facilitating the international exchange of knowledge and experience. The event brought together almost 300 participants from 27 countries for an intensive week of science, inspiring encounters, and discussions on contemporary organic chemistry.

The conference programme featured outstanding plenary lectures delivered by leading scientists from around the world, inspiring presentations during thematic sessions, and highly popular poster sessions. The main topics included modern methods of organic synthesis, asymmetric catalysis, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis, natural product synthesis, medicinal and bioorganic chemistry, as well as the design of new functional materials and nanomaterials. Each session provided an excellent opportunity for in-depth discussion, the exchange of expertise, and the establishment of new scientific contacts.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Professor Łukasz Albrecht, Vice-Rector for Science at Lodz University of Technology and Chair of the Conference. The event was officially opened by Professor Krzysztof Jóźwik, Rector of Lodz University of Technology. The inaugural lecture, entitled “Chemistry and Application of Dynamic MOF/PCP Beyond Rigidity and into the Realm of Soft Porous Crystals,” was delivered by Nobel Laureate Professor Susumu Kitagawa. Conference participants also had the opportunity to meet and speak with the Nobel Laureate in person during the evening welcome reception.

The programme over the following days included plenary lectures by distinguished chemists representing leading research institutions worldwide. The presentations delivered by invited scientists from United States, New Zeland, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Denamrk or China were equally inspiring. Another major highlight was the lecture by Professor Song Lin of Stanford University, recipient of the 2026 Thieme–IUPAC Prize, entitled “Microelectronics Meet Chemistry – from Wireless Electrochemistry to Reaction Telemetry.”

Throughout the week, numerous presentations were delivered during thematic sessions, enabling researchers to showcase the latest results of their work. The poster sessions also attracted considerable interest, providing a vibrant forum for the exchange of ideas between early-career researchers and experienced members of the international scientific community.

During the closing ceremony, the authors of the best oral and poster presentations received awards. These distinctions recognised the outstanding scientific quality of both the presentations and the research they showcased.

The 24th International Conference on Organic Synthesis provided a unique platform for showcasing the latest advances in organic synthesis, exchanging knowledge and expertise, and discussing current directions in the development of modern chemistry. The event also fostered new scientific connections and international partnerships that may lead to future collaborative research projects.

The conference was organised by Lodz University of Technology in cooperation with the Lodz University of Technology Foundation and the Polish Chemical Society. The event was held under the honorary patronage of the Minister of Science and Higher Education, the Mayor of the City of Łódź, the Marshal of the Łódź Voivodeship, and the Rector of Lodz University of Technology.
