The ECIU SEED program was established to stimulate collaboration among scientists within ECIU and enhance ongoing research efforts. It encompasses two actions: SP 1: Blended Mobility to Create Networks and SP 2: Seed Projects.

A total of 26 applications from all participating institutions were submitted as part of the ECIU SEED Programmes internal competition. The implementation of 7 projects, which account for half of the total grants awarded, by researchers from TUL is a very good result of our university demonstrating strong community involvement and recognition among partners. It will also be an excellent opportunity to deepen scientific cooperation with ECIU partners; to strengthen relationships and start joint research and innovation projects on a micro scale, which can then be used in larger grant applications e.g. in Horizon Europe competitions

- explains Assoc. Prof. Agnieszka Dybała-Dyfratyka, director of the Research Support Centre at TUL.

As a result of the evaluation of applications for the Research Seed Programme 2024, three grants will be executed by scientists from the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism at TUL: two in the discipline of Transport and Mobility and one in Resilient Communities.

Assoc. Prof. Monika Cysek-Pawlak will coordinate the project "Walkability and Emotions in Urban Environments: Exploring the Sense of (In)security and Urban Variables (Waves)" (SP 2) in collaboration with universities from Sweden, the Netherlands, and Finland. Additionally, she will seek joint activities in Resilient Communities with universities in Aveiro (Portugal) and Twente (Netherlands) (SP 1).

We have two years of excellent work ahead of us, during which we will develop international cooperation, learn about the peculiarities of the partner areas and pursue new scientific achievements, said the project coordinator from TUL.

The next project by the architects from TUL will be the responsibility of Assoc. Prof. Arch. Małgorzata Hanzl, who will cooperate with the Universities of Barcelona (Spain), Tampere (Finland) and Aveiro (Portugal) in the project “Youth MObility & Views for a sustainable, equitable and resilient future” (SP2 ).

Rafal Anyszka, PhD of the Faculty of Chemistry, will coordinate activities in the theme “ECIU Rubber Chair (ECIU RC) ” (SP 1), collaborating with researchers from the Universities of Tampere and Twente.

Prof. Michal Strzelecki of the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering will seek joint research points in the project entitled “ECIU Rubber Chair. “Machine learning approach for bone density classification and scaffold 3D printing” with the Universities of Aveiro and Tampere in the topics Citizen Science and Circular Economy (SP 1).

Assoc. Prof. Edyta Pietrzak from the Faculty of Organization and Management, together with the Universities of Dublin and Barcelona, will carry out joint activities within the framework of Citizen Science (SP 1), in a project entitled “Citizen Science and the Circular Economy. “Citizen Science and the Societal Impacts of Artificial Intelligence”.

Assoc. Prof. Joanna Oracz, from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences, will collaborate with Kaunas University of Technology and Aveiro University on the topic “From Waste to Opportunity: Sustainable Approaches to Food Waste” (SP 2).

The individual projects will take between one and two years to complete.
