Scientific achievements

Dr Marcin Gębski from the Faculty of Technical Physics, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at Lodz University of Technology works in photonics, optoelectronics and semiconductor physics. He develops new types of VCSEL lasers, mirrors, photonic structures and devices for light manipulation.

His key achievement is co-development of the first VCSEL lasers and arrays designed and fabricated entirely in Poland. Devices developed by dr Gębski enabled studies of photon Bose–Einstein condensation, neuromorphic laser networks, infrared illuminators, optical-pumping lasers and spectroscopy.

Research profile and research directions

Dr Gębski’s research covers design, fabrication and characterisation of photonic devices, semiconductor lasers, high-contrast gratings and integrated structures for telecommunications, LiDAR, spectroscopy and sensing systems.

Within his SONATA BIS project he develops semiconductor lasers with monolithic high-contrast grating mirrors. Future work includes a new VCSEL type emitting in wavelength ranges previously difficult for such lasers and its use in photonic integrated circuits.

Cooperation with industry and projects

He participates in international and national projects on a photonic microphone, gas sensors based on tunable quantum-dot VCSEL arrays, optical transceivers for satellite communication, photonics on germanium and hazardous gas analysers.

He has cooperated with TRUMPF Photonic Components, Crocus Labs, Vigo Photonics and Airoptic, designing and testing optoelectronic devices for optical telecommunications, LiDAR, infrared cameras, atomic clocks, greenhouse lighting and gas detection.

Distinctions and recogniotio by the sceientific community

He completed a four-year research stay at Technische Universität Berlin, developed VCSEL technology at Vigo Photonics and later at Łukasiewicz-IMiF. He publishes in leading journals, including Nature Photonics, Light: Science & Applications, Advanced Functional Materials, Laser & Photonics Reviews, ACS Photonics and Optica, reviews for photonics journals and received an NCN Etiuda fellowship. Dr inż. Marcin Gębski z Wydziału Fizyki Technicznej, Informatyki i Matematyki Stosowanej PŁ prowadzi badania w obszarze fotoniki, optoelektroniki i fizyki półprzewodników.

Urządzenia nad którymi pracuje umożliwiły m.in. badania nad kondensacją Bosego-Einsteina fotonów, sieciami neuromorficznymi, oświetlaczami podczerwonymi, laserami do pompowania optycznego i spektroskopią.
