Research achievements
Piotr Perek, M.Sc., from the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering at the Lodz University of Technology, is a specialist in computer science, electronics, and fusion technologies and engineering. His scientific achievements have been recognized internationally, as evidenced by numerous medals for his „Stereoscopic Image Recording Assistant” solution, including gold medals at trade fairs in Seoul, Iasi and Cluj-Napoca. Perek has also won industry awards, such as the IEEE Grand Prix Award and best scientific paper awards, including first place in the Prof. M. Pożaryski Competition and the Springer Outstanding Presentation Award. His work on diagnostic and control systems for large-scale fusion installations is a direct contribution of the university to the development of global clean energy sources.
Research profile and research directions
Perek’s research interests focus on data acquisition and processing systems, especially imaging systems, plasma diagnostics, and real-time systems. In his work, he utilizes modern hardware platforms such as MTCA.4, GPUs, and embedded systems, enabling the creation of scalable technologies for future low-emission energy systems. He combines computer science and electronics with plasma diagnostics, building the university’s interdisciplinary strength and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,
particularly in the areas of clean energy and industrial innovation.
Collaboration with industry, implementation and expertise
Mr. Perek plays a key role in projects of strategic importance to the global energy sector, such as ITER tokamak and the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, where his work includes designing and implementing diagnostic systems (e.g. ITER UWAVS, W7-X spectroscopic and infrared camera systems) and engineering and control applications for the ITER CODAC system. His research achievements are strongly linked to technology transfer to industry and collaboration with leading research centers worldwide, such as Japan’s QST and Bertin Technologies. Moreover, he actively supports the development of young scientists by serving as a reviewer for the prestigious "IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science" journal. His expertise strengthens Lodz University of Technology’s role as a partner for global industry leaders.
