Research Achievements
Professor Dariusz Heim, PhD, DSc, Eng., from the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering at Lodz University of Technology, is a recognised expert in the field of building physics and building energy performance. His contribution to the development of global science focuses on advanced modelling of heat transfer processes with phase change and the photothermal and photoelectrical conversion of solar radiation. The Professor has developed and verified innovative methods for monitoring sky luminance and daylighting assessment methods, which have significantly influenced the precision of building energy performance analyses. His research, covering building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and novel components with phase-change materials (PCM), forms the foundation for modern, sustainable building.
Research Profile and Interests
Prof. D. Heim’s main research interests include building physics, modelling and simulation of physical processes in buildings, renewable energy, and indoor environmental quality. Currently, he focuses on studying the energy efficiency of active envelope systems, aiming to optimise buildings towards low-emission standards. The Professor actively develops methods for assessing the impact of the external environment on buildings, combining the mathematical precision of simulations with practical engineering challenges. He is working on prefabricated, lightweight wall panels (the PRE-ActiVer project) and intelligent, efficient facades for low-energy buildings (the SELF-energy project).
Industrial Cooperation, Implementations, and Expert Activity
Prof. D. Heim’s activity is characterised by a strong focus on technology transfer to the economy, as evidenced by numerous patents, including one for a composite granulate with enhanced heat storage capacity, obtained in cooperation with Sto sp. z o.o.. The Professor holds key expert roles, serving as the President of the Association of Energy Auditors and the Chairman of the Technical Committee KT179 of the Polish Committee for Standardisation. He actively participates in international research consortia (leading M-ERA.NET projects) and collaborates with scientific centres in Argentina and the USA. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Building Performance Simulation and serves as the Vice-Chair of the Building Physics Section of the Civil and Water Engineering Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN).
