professor of information and communication technology
priority research area: HealthTech
Scientific achievements
Professor Michał Strzelecki from the Institute of Electronics at the Lodz University of Technology is a specialist in the computer analysis and recognition of biomedical images and the applications of artificial intelligence in diagnostic imaging. His research includes the development of methods for the processing, segmentation, classification and quantitative analysis of medical images from various modalities, in particular MRI, CT, ultrasound and radiography. He co-developed the MaZda package for image texture analysis, which is used by research centers worldwide and has been widely cited in scientific literature. Another key area of his work is the segmentation of 3D images of blood vessels and the use of computational fluid dynamics methods to model haemodynamics and assess the impact of pathological changes and stents on blood flow.
Research profile and research directions
His research interests focus on integrating classical image analysis methods with machine learning and deep learning to obtain objective quantitative information to support diagnosis, treatment planning and the assessment of treatment outcomes. Professor Strzelecki is developing methods in radiomics (texture analysis), automatic segmentation and the detection of pathological lesions in medical images, and is also investigating the impact of image acquisition conditions on image quality and diagnostic reliability. He is conducting research into clinical decision support systems, combining imaging data with clinical data and physical models. He collaborates with medical centres both in Poland and abroad. He has participated in national and international projects, and from 2006 to 2008 he worked as a Visiting Professor at Jeonbuk National University in the Republic of Korea.
Honours and recognition from the scientific community
Professor Strzelecki has many years of experience in organizational, expert and academic circles. He was Deputy Director of the Institute of Electronics at the Technical University of Lodz (PŁ), Vice-Dean for Research and Development at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Information Technology and Automation (EEIA) at PŁ, a member of the PŁ Senate, and Chair of the Council for the Discipline of Technical Informatics and Telecommunications. He is Chair of the Committee for the Evaluation
of Scientific Disciplines at the Technical University of Lodz and a member of the Committee on Metrology and Scientific Instruments of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He has served as an expert and reviewer for national and international research funding bodies, including the National Science Centre (NCN), the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBiR),
COST, the European Research Executive Agency, and agencies in Chile, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Canada. He participates in the work of conference committees and the editorial boards of scientific publications; he is a member of the Image Processing Society and the Polish Society for Medical Informatics; and he has supervised five PhD students.
