Scientific achivements

Professor Tomasz Kubiak of Lodz University of Technology specialises in structural mechanics, strength of materials and stability of thin-walled structures. He has been affiliated with Lodz University of Technology since 1992. He received his PhD in 1998, habilitation in 2008 and title of Professor of Technical Sciences in 2014.

His key achievements include describing the behaviour of thin-walled structures under static and dynamic load. He developed dynamic buckling criterion and studied interactions between buckling modes in thin-walled structures.

Research profile and research directions

Professor Kubiak’s research focuses on structural mechanics, thin-walled metal and composite structures, with particular emphasis on their stability and post-buckling behaviour, load-bearing capacity, and the influence of geometric imperfections.

His research combines numerical methods, particularly FEM, with experimental studies. A significant part of his work focuses on FRP laminates, and the causes of buckling load and capacity degradation.

In recent years, he has developed methods for analysing thin-walled isotropic and laminate elements under in-plane harmonic loads. Future work concerns laminates damaged by low-velocity impact and the influence of damage on their behaviour and fatigue life.

Cooperation with the socio-economic environment and projects

He has led National Science Centre projects on dynamic response of isotropic, orthotropic and composite plates, instability of composite profiles and load-bearing capacity of thin-walled beam-columns with service damage.

He has carried out expert opinions and development studies for industry, including assessments of structural strength and stiffness. He has prepared more than 50 studies, cooperating with ABB Łódź, Hitachi Energy, PKN Orlen S.A. and Airbus Helicopters Polska.

Distinctions and recognition by the scientific community

Professor Kubiak is a member of the Polish Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, an expert of the National Science Centre, a member of the Mechanics Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences and a member of the editorial board of “Composite Structures”. Since 2024, he has chaired the Advisory Team for Research Infrastructure at the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Since 2015, he has headed the Department of Strength of Materials and Structures, and from 2016 to 2024 was Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. He has received Rector’s Awards of Lodz University of Technology and, since 2020, has been listed in the World’s Top 2% Scientists ranking.
