Professor Osman Achmatowicz was born in Bergaliszki near Vilnius on 16 March 1899. He began his studies at Vilnius University in 1919. He was awarded an MSc degree in 1925 and the doctoral degree in 1928. He obtained the degree of doctor of philosophy during his scholarship in the Dyson Perrins Laboratory in Oxford (1930). Having returned to Vilnius in 1933, he completed his post-doctoral degree (habilitation) and a year later, already as associate professor, he was appointed chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry at the University of Warsaw. He came to Lodz at the invitation of Prof. Bohdan Stefanowski in 1945 and participated in the establishment of the University as Vice-Rector of Lodz University of Technology. He became Rector of Lodz University of Technology in 1948. 

Important functions:

  • at the University: Rector of Lodz University of Technology (1948-1952), Vice-Rector (1945-1948);

  • outside the University: director of the Polish Cultural Institute in London (1969), member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, vice-president of the Polish Chemical Society (1937-1939).
