The inaugural address was delivered by Professor Krzysztof Jóźwik, Rector of Lodz University of Technology. Reflecting on the collaborative efforts since the signing of the ŁPA declaration, he remarked, ‘I am confident that this academic year will bring many more significant initiatives’.

He also emphasized that the voice of Lodz’s universities resonates more and more on the global stage. For instance, the University of Lodz is a member of the UNIC network, Lodz University of Technology co-creates ECIU, and the University of Music belongs to the AEC. Importantly, however, the universities remain deeply connected to the city and region, with many theses and research projects focused on issues relevant to Łódź.

Invoking the spirit of solidarity in challenging times, Rector Prof. Jóźwik highlighted that both distant history and recent years have brought about valuable lessons. ‘During the pandemic, we supported those in need, and in 2022, as a frontline state, we recognized the importance of unity and cooperation.’ He also mentioned the community’s solidarity with southwestern Poland during the catastrophic flooding. ‘I am proud that the academic community in Łódź is always ready to extend support to those in need,’ he added, referencing recent events.

On the topic of university membership in European networks, the Rector pointed to the tremendous benefits in the quality of research and education, and in staff development. He noted that significant transformations have taken place on campuses across Łódź, such as the Central Teaching Hospital of The Medical University of Lodz, the Concert Hall at the University of Music, the Academic Design Center at the Academy of Fine Arts, and the New Media Center at Lodz Film School. ‘These investments benefit the local community and demonstrate how universities positively impact their surroundings. We have immense intellectual capital and all the necessary tools to collaborate on future projects within the Łódź academic community’, said the Rector.

He further stated, ‘Each of the ŁPA member universities is building its potential, infrastructure, and research facilities. We must remain united and ensure that external pressures and poorly conceived ideas do not disrupt our progress. A university is a source of knowledge, a pursuit of truth, and a community that serves science without borders and the greater good of the nation. It is a place for those who strive to uphold these core values – free from political influence, religious or racial prejudice, and unhealthy ambition. This gives us the right to assert that no one should force us into unity if we are already working well together. But more importantly, let no one attempt to divide us – whether as the ŁPA or as individual institutions’.

Looking ahead to the upcoming anniversary year, Rector Jóźwik expressed his hope that the rich, 80-year tradition of Łódź universities will inspire boldness and ambition in their academic pursuits. ‘Seeing the energy and success of our students, researchers, and the entire academic community, I am confident that we are to enjoy many moments of celebration in the foreseeable future.’

To the students and staff, Professor Jóźwik wished success in their interdisciplinary initiatives, as well as passion, determination, and commitment in their work.

The highlight of the ceremony was the matriculation of newly admitted students and doctoral candidates. The rectors of Łódź universities administered the oaths to student representatives, formally welcoming them into the academic community. The ceremony concluded with a performance of the anthem Gaude Mater Polonia by the Choir of the Medical University of Lodz.

The ŁPA also invited Professor Jerzy Jarniewicz from the University of Lodz to deliver the inaugural lecture. A renowned poet, translator, literary scholar, and winner of the 2022 NIKE Literary Award, Professor Jarniewicz titled his lecture, Po co nam czternasta Alicja? Czyli o sensie ponowionych przekładów [Do we really need a fourteenth Alice? On the value of renewed translations].

The ceremony’s artistic section featured a performance by students from the University of Music in Lodz.
