The exhibition of photographs exploring the understanding of freedom as an enlightened, humanistic ideal of the human good and humanity also extends over to artistic license. Not just ‘freedom from’, but above all ‘liberty to’, as philosophers, especially existentialists, understood the essence of this idea! Among the immanent presuppositions of human rights lies also the desire to pursue and choose and realize truth, goodness, and beauty.

The presented photographs move towards such an artistic attitude: rather then that of destruction, debasement, descent into madness, the dominating artistic attitude was that of rational observation, equilibrium of feelings and thoughts, reflection, harmony of form. The artist – photographer’s way of seeing and depicting reality reflects their inner, emotional, intellectual states.

The exhibition at the Biblio-Art Gallery at the Library of Lodz University of Technology strikes with its uncommon perception of the principle of balance and appropriateness of form and content, which is no mean feat in any art, and especially in photography. The choice of the subject matter and the way it is approached, the ability to convey individual perception of the essence of beauty and emotion bespeak artistic sensitivity of the authors of the works.
