The Disco Angels, a group of students from the FTIMS of Lodz University of Technology, won in the category Best Gameplay in the finals of the Indie Showcase during the international Game Access Conference in Brno (Czechia) that concluded on June 1. Their game, Heartbreaker, competed against more than a hundred indie games (short for 'independent game') created by small and medium-sized companies from Canada, Austria, Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Moldova.

‘The fact that our team was interdisciplinary contributed a great deal to this success,' says Michał Galiński, programmer and coordinator on the Disco Angels team, 'Everyone pitched in skills: programming, graphics, music, design, and work organization. The final outcome was a full-fledged game that was so well-received during the finals. People who tried the game went on to fetch their friends telling them 'You really need to play it!'. For us, that was the best reward of the event.’

The team's project was also nominated for the Top3 in the Best Art category. 'The visual style of the game refers to geometric architecture. I was particularly inspired by the postmodern designs of Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill,' explains Agata Granosik, 2D/3D artist on the Disco Angels team. 'An additional challenge was to properly select the colors used in the game so that all players, including those with vision problems, could play the game comfortably. To this end, our design includes several accessibility options tailored just for people with such needs.'

‘The nomination for the Top3 in two of three categories of the competition and the win in one of them shows how advanced student projects developed at Lodz University of Technology are’, sums up dr inż. Jarosław Andrzejczak from the TUL FTIMS Faculty, who provided guidance to the team in the preparations and during the finals. ’It is a perfect testament to the expertise of our academic staff and the kind of education we offer, as well as a confirmation of the slogan we promote 'Gamedev: born in Łódź!.”

‘Feel free to give our game a go. It is free to download at https://disco-angels.itch.io/heartbreaker, But above all, go and create your own games and share them with fellow game players’  encourages Michał Galiński.

The team made it to the Indie Showcase finals by virtue of winning last year's fifteenth edition of the Computer Game Development Team Competition. Next edition of the competition is due to start later this month. The story of the award winning game development project can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_xnj8MikRo
