The Webometrics Ranking of World Universities takes into account 3 indicators: visibility/impact with a weighting of 50% (how readily other sites redirect to content on the university's site), transparency/openness with a weighting of 10% (citations from the top 310 public profiles/authors of a university, excluding the first 30) and excellence with a weighting of 40% (the university's share of the top 10% most-cited articles).

The ranking is published by Cybermetrics Lab, a research group of the Spanish Superior Council for Scientific Research (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC), based in Madrid. Established in 1939, it is the largest public institution dedicated to scientific research in Spain and reports to the Ministry of Science and Innovation. The results are published twice a year - in January and July.

The places on the world podium, as in the previous edition, are occupied by American universities. Among Polish universities, the highest ranked are Warsaw University (338th in the world), Jagiellonian University (392th) and the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow (560th). The top 1,000 in the ranking included 12 Polish universities, including six technical universities.
