Scientific achievements

Professor Adam Wojciechowski from the Faculty of Technical Physics, Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at the Łódź University of Technology is a leading expert in the field of intelligent human–computer interaction, an interdisciplinary area of research at the intersection of 
computer science and biomedical engineering, which aims to improve users’ communication with computer systems. He is the author of nearly 90 papers published in prestigious JCR-listed journals and at prestigious conferences.

Research profile and research directions

His research interests include multimodal intelligent user interfaces, in particular visual interfaces, brain-computer interfaces and sound interfaces. His most significant scientific achievements relate to methods for the analysis and classification of electroencephalographic signals, visual analysis of faces and eye movements, and intelligent user interfaces supporting medical therapy and rehabilitation. He participated in the development of an intelligent dual user interface for immersive environments, implemented using GRYDSEN technology, for use in cognitive-motor therapy for older people. The effectiveness of the therapeutic system in maintaining motor skills, memory and concentration in older people has been clinically proven. Together with an international team (Poland, Slovakia, Latvia, Israel, Switzerland), he developed artificial intelligence methods to improve the detection of motor imagery tasks in EEG signals for use in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). The intelligent BCI interface has been integrated into a VR immersive environment within the ReHaB therapeutic system, designed for early post-stroke neurorehabilitation, and is currently undergoing clinical trials. He has developed a unique interface incorporating gamification mechanisms, which stimulates motor paradigms that activate the cerebral cortex in children, thereby effectively reducing the children’s apparent age, as measured by MRI, to 7 years. As part of an international team (Poland, Montenegro), he is conducting research into the protection (watermarking) of biomedical signals, which represents a current challenge for the security of IT systems in medicine. He has been a principal investigator on numerous national and international research projects.

Honours and recognitation from the scientific community

He is a member of the Digital Multimedia Section at the Institute of Computer Science, Polish Academy of Sciences (KI PAN), a member of the Polish Society for Information Technology (PSSI), a member of the scientific committees of international conferences, an editor of the journal Human Technology, and an associate editor of the journal Expert Systems. The methods and technologies he has developed have been commercialised, including beyond Poland, and have gained widespread recognition; for example, GRYDSEN has won gold medals in France, Japan, China and Thailand.
