Scientific achievements

Professor Joanna Kałużna-Czaplińska from the Faculty of Chemistry at the Lodz University of Technology is a distinguished expert in analytical chemistry, with particular expertise in bioanalytical research employing chromatographic techniques coupled with mass spectrometry. Her scientific achievements include numerous publications in Journal Citation Reports (JCR)-indexed journals, book chapters, and three textbooks on the fundamentals of biochromatography, chromatography, and electromigration techniques. She has also served as Guest Editor of a special issue of Reviews in Analytical Chemistry.

Research profile and research directions

Her research interests in bioanalytics, metabolomics, and nutrimetabolomics focus on the identification of biomarkers and the analysis of metabolic pathways associated with neurological and metabolic disorders. In pioneering studies investigating the metabolic basis of autism spectrum disorder, she demonstrated the presence of significant metabolic disturbances in children, contributing not only to a better understanding of the disorder but also to the implementation of individualized dietary interventions.

Among her most significant scientific achievements is the application of metabolomics as a comprehensive tool for evaluating biochemical alterations occurring in the human body. The findings of her research support the development of personalized therapeutic strategies based on individual metabolic profiles. Her current research focuses on the interactions between diet, the gut microbiome, and the metabolome, as well as the gut-brain axis. These studies contribute to a deeper understanding of the roles of metabolism, oxidative stress, and the gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder, Parkinson’s disease, and drug-resistant epilepsy. In parallel, she conducts archaeometric research aimed at identifying organic archaeological residues and reconstructing the dietary habits of ancient populations.

Honours and recognition from the scientific community

Professor Kałużna-Czaplińska is a laureate of the Professor Andrzej Waksmundzki Medal awarded by the Polish Academy of Sciences for outstanding scientific achievements in chromatography, the Central European Group for Separation Sciences Medal for her contributions to the advancement of chromatography and separation sciences nationally and internationally, and Recognition Medals of the Committee on Analytical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences for promoting analytical chemistry. Her scientific achievements have been repeatedly recognized through inclusion in the prestigious Stanford Top 2% Scientists ranking of the world's most influential researchers.

For many years, she has organized international scientific conferences devoted to chromatography, metabolomics, and advanced analytical methods, including Metabolomics Circle (MetCircle 2024), Advances in Pharmaceutical Analysis (APA 2024), and the Central European Group for Separation Sciences Conference (2019).

She leads the Poland Chemistry and Nutrition Research Group, operating within the international Council for Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (CONEM). She is also actively involved in the scientific community as a member of the Committee on Analytical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Commission on Chromatographic Analysis and Related Techniques of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Polish Metabolomics Society.
