Scientific achievements
Professor Piotr Paneth has devoted his scientific career to understanding how isotope effects reveal the physicochemical principles governing chemical and biological processes. His research has contributed to the theoretical foundations of isotope effects in complex reactions, established chlorine isotope effects as mechanistic probes of enzymatic transformations, and pioneered the development of binding isotope effects as a new approach to investigating molecular recognition. These studies have opened new directions in computational chemistry, enzymology, medicinal chemistry, and environmental sciences. More recently, his work has focused on non-covalent isotope effects and their application to rational drug design, proposing new concepts for exploiting isotope effects in medicine and drug design.
Research profile
His research combines theoretical chemistry, quantum-chemical calculations, molecular simulations, isotope-ratio mass spectrometry, and experimental enzymology to investigate reaction mechanisms and molecular interactions. He has coordinated numerous national and international research projects and established long-term collaborations with leading research centers in Europe, the United States, and Japan. Beyond fundamental studies, his research has contributed to environmental chemistry, polymer science, and medical applications of stable isotopes, illustrating the broad interdisciplinary impact of isotope chemistry.
Community Recognition
Professor Paneth is internationally recognized as one of the leading researchers in isotope-effect studies. He served as a Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Vive-rector for Science. Currently chairs the Scientific Board of the Centre of Molecular and Macromolecular Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. His contributions have been recognized by, among others, the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Jan Zawidzki Medal of the Polish Chemical Society, the Senior Fulbright Scholarship, and the JSPS Invitation Fellowship.
