Scientific achievements
Dr. Jakub Jurek from the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering, is researcher in the field of biomedical engineering. His scientific output comprises 13 publications in Journal Citation Reports (JCR)-indexed journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings.
Research profile and research directions
Dr. Jurek's research focuses on the application of computational methods, including artificial intelligence, to the acquisition, processing, and analysis of medical images, with particular emphasis on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). He has authored studies on image super-resolution and denoising techniques, which are of fundamental importance for improving the diagnostic value of medical images. This research has the potential to overcome technological limitations of contemporary imaging systems, which require trade-offs between image noise, spatial resolution, and acquisition time.
His work also investigates the application of artificial intelligence models to the diagnosis of prostate and bladder cancer.
Dr. Jurek collaborates with researchers from internationally recognized institutions, including the University of Bergen (Norway) and Lund University (Sweden).
He was the principal investigator of a MINIATURA research grant awarded by the Polish National Science Centre (Narodowe Centrum Nauki, NCN).
Honours and recognition from the scientific community
Dr. Jakub Jurek has been actively involved in research at Lodz University of Technology since his undergraduate studies. In 2015, his master's thesis, Machine Learning in Prostate Cancer Detection Using mpMRI, received the award of the Association of Polish Electrical Engineers (SEP) as well as the Łódź ACM Chapter Award for the best master's thesis defended at the Faculty of Electrical, Electronic, Computer and Control Engineering.
In 2017, he received the Best Paper Award for the publication Rule-based Data-driven Approach for Computer-Aided Diagnosis of Peripheral Zone Prostate Cancer from Multiparametric MRI: Proof of Concept at the Signal Processing Conference – Algorithms, Architectures, Arrangements, Applications (SPA) in Poznań, within the Biomedical and Biometric Applications session.
In 2023, he served as the main organizer of the Erasmus Basic MRI Physics training course held at the Institute of Electronics, Lodz University of Technology.
He is regularly invited to serve as a reviewer for scientific publications on the application of artificial intelligence in medical imaging.
