Oak Fabricant a pedunculate oak of the beech family is one of the most magnificent trees growing in Bishop Klepacz Park. It is 180 years old and the height of the tree is 22.5 meters. What’s amazing about it is the thickness of its trunk – 4.58 meters in circumference, the spread of its crown – diameter of more than 30 meters, and above all the thickness and length of its powerful branches. It is rare to find a tree of such shape and size.
Since its early years, the oak has always grown in the open, so it did not have to compete for light and its branches were not pruned. As a result, it was able to grow in width and form a peculiar shape, very different from other trees. Thanks to these qualities, Oak Fabrykant was nominated for the nationwide contest for the Tree of the Year 2022, which it won. Then it represented Poland at the European contest and won the title of European Tree of the Year 2023.
Some call the oak Fabrykant, and others Jagosz in honour of Mieczysław Jagoszewski, a long-time journalist and editor of Dziennik Łódzki.
By unveiling this commemorative plaque today, we, the academic community of Lodz University of Technology, wish to commemorate this unique natural monument, which delights us every day with its majesty. As a university, we made a great effort to make this oak tree the European Tree of the Year. It received nearly 46,000 votes from Internet users and beat 15 competitors from Europe by a huge margin, said TUL Rector Prof. Krzysztof Jóźwik.
The commemorative plaque was designed by Tomasz Wochna of the TUL Promotion Department. The plaque was unveiled on May 24, the 78th birthday of Lodz University of Technology.
