Professor Edward Kącki was born on 12th November 1925 in Poznań. In 1952, he obtained the professional title of Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Lodz University of Technology, in 1963 the doctoral degree, and in 1970 the post-doctoral degree, also at Lodz University of Technology. In 1989 he was awarded the title of full professor.
Professor E. Kącki initiated the creation of the computer science major at the Faculty of Technical Physics, Information Technology and Applied Mathematics (FTIMS) of Lodz University of Technology. He was a valued academic teacher and an educator of several generations of students. He performed many important organizational functions: he was the Dean of the Faculty (1984-1987) and the Head of the Institute of Computer Science (1980-1986). From 1997 to 2011 he was the Rector of the University of Information Technology in Lodz.
In the years 1975-1997 he was the president of the Lodz Branch of the Polish Cybernetics Society, in the years 1989-1991 he was the president of the Lodz Branch of the Medical Information Technology Society (TIM), and since 1991 he has been the president of the Main Board of this Society.
Professor Edward Kącki has promoted 37 doctoral degrees and many of his alumni are professors at universities in Poland and abroad, including France, Canada, Mexico, Cuba and Vietnam.
Professor is the founder of three scientific schools: Modelling and Simulation Research Languages; Optimization Algorithms for Systems with Distributed Parameters; and Artificial Intelligence. He was the author of numerous scientific publications, monographs and textbooks for students. He was a recipient of many national awards and honours, among others: Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
Professor possessed extraordinary energy and cheerfulness. His dedication to science and involvement in the development of the academic staff as well as his cordiality and kindness will always be remembered by the academic community of Lodz University of Technology.
The funeral of Professor Edward Kącki will be held on 26 January (Wednesday) at 10.30 a.m. in the Saint Anthony's Cemetery in Lodz, 11 Solec Street (Mania).
