Anna Skrzyńska, Ph.D., from the Institute of Organic Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry, has received nearly PLN 50,000 to conduct research in the project Radical reactions involving N-heterocyclic carbenes - search for new reaction systems.

As the winner explains:

This research involves the development of new, effective radical transformations catalyzed by NHC (N-heterocyclic carbenes), which occur by single electron transfer (SET). Planned cascade reactions involving N-heterocyclic carbenes will allow easy access to various structural motifs with potential biological activity.

Agnieszka Pietrzyk-Brzezinska, PhD, from the Institute of Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences, has received nearly 50,000 PLN for Analysis of the Interactions of the Response Regulator to Cephalosporins and Chloramphenicol with Effectors and DNA.

What will the researcher be working on?

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is currently listed by the World Health Organization as one of the main threats to the health and life of humanity. Molecular mechanisms of microbial resistance involve the action of many different proteins, including regulators belonging to the TetR family. The aim of the project is to study the TetR family regulator related to the response to antibiotics - chloramphenicol and cephalosporins, and the results obtained will constitute a good basis for the development of inactivators of this protein in the future.

- explains Agnieszka Pietrzyk-Brzezińska. TetR is one of the main families of proteins associated with the bacterial cell's response to the presence of specific chemicals in the environment, including antibiotics.

The main objective of the MINIATURA 7 competition is to finance research activities for the purposes of future research projects to be submitted to other national or international competitions. In the competition, it was possible to obtain funds of 5,000 PLN to 50,000 PLN to finance a research activity to be carried out over a period of up to 12 months.
