Lodz University of Technology together with partners from France, Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands and Hungary representing research centers and companies related to the shipbuilding industry has obtained funding in Horizon 2020 programme. The consortium will implement a project for which the European Union has allocated PLN 26 million. From this amount, almost 900 thousand zlotys will be spent on research conducted by Lodz University of Technology.

The acronym FIBRE4YARDS comes from Fibre composite manufacturing technologies FOR the automation and modular construction in shipYARDS,  The project implemented by 13 partners is coordinated by the Spanish research center Centre Internacional de Mètodes Numèrics a l'enginyeria in Barcelona.

-  The activities in FIBRE4YARDS are to comply with the concept of Shipyard 4.0, which aims to reduce costs, production time, improve the quality of the products made, as well as better match the product to the needs of customers. All this is to increase the competitiveness of European shipyards - says Prof. Ireneusz Zbiciński from the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering

The main objective of the FIBRE4YARDS project is to develop innovative and automated technologies for the production of small and medium-sized vessels made of FRP - a composite material made of carrier fibres embedded in thermosetting resin. The participation of industry entrepreneurs means that it is envisaged to design and produce demonstration vessels on a real scale to demonstrate the possibilities of innovative technologies.

The objective of the research conducted at Lodz University of Technology is to determine the environmental effects associated with the manufacturing of vessels made of FRP material, their exploitation, maintenance, disassembly or disposal at the end of life cycle.
