The Ministry of Science and Higher Education has allocated 6.5 million PLN to Lodz University of Technology, to subsidize the investment project called “Renovation of the 2nd Dormitory”.

The renovation is necessary mainly due to the situation caused by the COVID-19 pandemics and the need to minimize the risk of contracting COVID-19 among students and dormitory personnel. Moreover, housing offered by the university should guarantee the possibility of isolating the ill, which makes it necessary to increase the number of individual rooms with bathrooms.

The Rector of Lodz University of Technology, Prof. Krzysztof Jóźwik, says:

It is a 10-million PLN investment. We will be implementing the project in the years 2020-2022. Next year, we are planning to make use of the subsidy awarded by the Ministry, while the University will finance the remaining costs. The 2nd Dormitory is one of the oldest dorms of Lodz University of Technology. If it is not thoroughly renovated, it will be very difficult, if not impossible in some respects, to meet the current safety requirements regarding human health and the pandemics.

Due to restrictions imposed on the possibility of conducting classes at the University, the renovation will not significantly limit the University’s capacity to accommodate students from outside Lodz.

The Rector emphasizes:

Another factor contributing to the investment is the international student sports event called “European Universities Games”, planned for the second half of July 2022. As the host, Lodz University of Technology is obliged to provide the participants with safe accommodation that complies with all the necessary regulations.

How will the 2nd Dormitory change

The Director of the University Campus, Janina Mrozowska, says:

Rooms in the 2nd Dormitory will offer a better living standard, which will make the building more attractive both for students and visitors of Lodz University of Technology. After the renovation, all the rooms will be single and equipped with bathrooms. It will be possible to accommodate 68 students there.

Director Janina Mrozowska adds that there will be no more shared toilets and showers in the building. New bathroom fittings and fixtures, as well as electrical, gas and central heating installations will be provided. The latest fire protection and smoke exhaust systems, as well as emergency lighting will be installed for the inhabitants’ safety. The rooms will be equipped with EI30 fire doors, while the existing staircase will be fitted with fire protection walls and doors. A lift will be installed to adapt the building to the needs of people with disabilities.
