The feeling that the voice of young scientists can be heard and can change something gives me power to work, says Assoc. Prof. Eng. Marta Gmurek, professor at the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering at TUL, the new Vice-Chairman of thePolish Young Academy - Polish Academy of Sciences.

According to the young researcher, membership in Polish Young Academy enables her to broaden her horizons.

It is an opportunity to hold various discussions and learn about the world of science outside the gates of your university. The very election as a member of the Polish Young Academy is a great honour and an incredible opportunity for scientific development through the possibility of working in committees of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It is an important experience worth living

- explains professor Gmurek, who has been a member of the Academy for two years and will take up her new position in December.

In the nearest future the new Vice-Chairwoman is going to actively engage in activities aimed at popularising science.

In this respect, I want to focus on chemical engineering, science politics and the promotion of scientific excellence. But also on building the recognition of Polish Young Academy in the environment of young scientists and the influence of the Academy on the decision-making environment in the field of science politics

- she reveals her plans for the future.

She is most excited about the development of highly qualified young scientists, thanks to whom it is possible to build strong scientific centres and introduce good practices.

I am looking forward to new challenges

adds the researcher, who is a mother of two young children and regrets the disproportion and very little system support for young women in the world of science.

The dilemma of choosing one's own development or the development of a family is still common. I am very grateful to fate and to my husband that I can fulfil myself as both a mother and a scientist. But I know that not everyone is so lucky. I would like to focus on that too.

Polish Young Academy has in its ranks outstanding researchers representing all fields of science. It is a unit of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which was established to activate the environment of young scientists and to popularise science.
