Prof Tomasz Kapitaniak is nominated in the field of technical sciences, mechanics and electronics, for his research on the chaotic behaviour of dynamic systems in engineering science models. His research focuses on non-linear dynamics. His most important scientific discoveries include the development of control and synchronisation methods for chaotic systems, the identification and description of new types of bifurcations, the identification of the synchronisation mechanism in coupled mechanical oscillators and the elucidation of the origin of randomness in a mechanical system.

Prof. Kapitaniak has published more than 300 scientific papers in renowned journals from the Clarivate Analytics list, which have been cited more than 8,000 times. He is a full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2019) and Academia Europaea (2021) and heads the Department of Dynamics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at TUL.

The two other candidates for the award are Prof. Mariusz Jaskólski from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań - chemical sciences, X-ray crystallography, and Prof. Lechosław Latos-Grażyński from Wrocław University - chemical sciences, organic chemistry.

The Heisig Prize is called the 'Polish Nobel'. The intention of the founder of the award, Professor Norbert Heisig, is to honour Polish scientists who conduct research at the highest level and whose discoveries change the world. The winner of the second edition, who will receive PLN 200 000, will be announced on 2 October at the University of Wrocław.
