Scientific achievements

Prof. Tomasz Czyszanowski is a scientist in the discipline of physical sciences, an outstanding specialist in the field of semiconductor photonics. 
His publishing output includes 80 articles in Q1 journals, among these Nature 
Materials and Nature Photonics. He is a co-author of 14 patent applications in Poland and a patent in the USA. Prof. Czyszanowski’s most important recent scientific achievement is the experimental demonstration of Bose–Einstein condensation of photons in a semiconductor Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) operating at room temperature, published in 2024 in the journal Nature Photonics. This result concerns the fundamental mechanisms of coherence formation in semiconductor lasers and combines the phenomena of photon condensates physics with semiconductor light source technology. 

Research profile

Prof. Czyszanowski integrates optoelectronics, quantum physics, and semiconductor technologies. His work focuses on the design and analysis of semiconductor lasers , and advanced semiconductor photonicstructures . He employs numerical modelling, analysis of optical phenomena and the development of new design concepts. His research leads to improved emission parameters, stability and efficiency of light sources, and a better understanding of the processes of coherence generation and wave 
propagation in nanostructures. The results find applications in optical communication, LiDAR systems, sensors and information processing technologies. He cooperates with leading research centers in Germany, Sweden, France, Singapore and Taiwan. 

Projects and industry collaboration

He has lead numerous research projects funded by national funds (4 NCN OPUS projects grants) and international projects, which include Horizon Europe projects (including EIC Pathfinder and initiatives in the field of photonics and satellite communication called: Mini-BOT, PhotoGeNIC, PIONEAR), M-ERA.NET projects and the European Defence Fund. He cooperates with industry by designing innovative solutions for companies such as TRUMPF Photonic Components GmbH, VIGO System S.A. and Crocus Labs GmbH. He is a member of the scientific committee of the SPIE Photonics Europe conference, co-organizes the Workshop on Physics and Technology of Semiconductor Lasers. He reviews articles for leading journals and grant applications for national institutions, DAAD and Research Foundation – Flanders. For his scientific achievements hasawarded scholarships by the FNP „Kolumb”, „Start” and the Polish Academy of Sciences.
