Academic Achievements
Jacek Szafran, DSc, PhD, Eng., is an Associate Professor representing the discipline of Civil Engineering, Geodesy, and Transport. His research combines advanced numerical modelling, large-scale experimental investigations, and engineering practice. Among his most significant recent achievements is a comprehensive research programme on the assessment and strengthening of steel lattice structures based on full-scale experimental testing conducted within the NTRCO project. This work has addressed stability failure mechanisms, numerical simulations, and practical methods for enhancing the load-bearing capacity of existing structures. The results have been disseminated through scientific publications, technical expert reports, and patent applications.
Research Profile
Professor Szafran’s research interests include structural reliability analysis, the mechanics of slender structures, structural diagnostics, and the design and strengthening of tall steel structures. A particular focus of his work is telecommunications towers and other forms of critical infrastructure. His research employs probabilistic methods, advanced numerical analyses, and experimental investigations to improve the safety and resilience of engineering structures. He maintains active international collaborations with researchers across Europe and Asia and participates in international initiatives dedicated to infrastructure resilience under extreme environmental loading. He has also developed extensive cooperation with leading Chinese universities, including Beijing University of Technology, Tongji University, and Shandong University of Science and Technology.
Industry Collaboration and Recognition
As Chief Designer and President of Compact-Project.PL, Professor Szafran has played a leading role in the development and implementation of standardized steel telecommunications tower systems, and the preparation of numerous technical assessments and expert studies concerning telecommunications infrastructure safety. He has collaborated with major industry stakeholders, including T-Mobile Polska, Cellnex Europe, P4/Play, Polkomtel Infrastruktura, Towerlink Poland, and EmiTel.
He has also contributed to the development of global design standards, serving as Chair of ISO Technical Committee 98 Basis for Design of Structures and Chair of ISO TC 98/SC2 Reliability of Structures. He is a member of scientific councils, technical committees, and professional organizations at both national and international levels, serves as an expert for the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR), and acts as a reviewer for leading international scientific journals.Dr hab. inż. Jacek Szafran, profesor uczelni, reprezentuje dyscyplinę inżynieria lądowa, geodezja i transport. Jego dorobek naukowy obejmuje liczne publikacje w renomowanych czasopismach krajowych i międzynarodowych, a prowadzona działalność badawcza łączy zaawansowane modelowanie numeryczne, badania eksperymentalne oraz praktykę inżynierską. Najważniejszym osiągnięciem naukowym ostatnich lat jest program badań dotyczący oceny i wzmacniania stalowych konstrukcji kratowych na podstawie wyników pełnoskalowych badań eksperymentalnych w projekcie NTRCO. Badania te obejmują analizę mechanizmów utraty stateczności, modelowanie numeryczne oraz opracowywanie praktycznych metod zwiększania nośności istniejących obiektów. Wyniki znalazły odzwierciedlenie w publikacjach naukowych, ekspertyzach technicznych oraz zgłoszeniach patentowych.
