Scientific achievements

Dr. Hab. Eng. Marcin Barburski, professor of TUL, represents the discipline of Materials Engineering. His most significant scientific achievements include the development and patenting of innovative flame-retardant biocomposites based on wool and flax fibres combined with a PLA matrix. He demonstrated that the hybridisation of natural fibres makes it possible to create materials that combine high mechanical strength with excellent vibration-damping properties and enhanced fire safety. Another important achievement was the implementation of tailored fibre placement technology for manufacturing precise composite reinforcements, as well as the development of multilayer structures integrating 3D-printed cores with textile reinforcing elements.

Research profile and research directions

His research focuses on the design and modelling of textile structures with specialised mechanical, acoustic, and functional properties for applications in modern transportation systems and lightweight engineering structures. He also applies micro-computed tomography for the analysis of textile structures and studies active textile-polymer composites with advanced electromagnetic properties.

He coordinated the Horizon Europe project “Sustainable Industrial Design of Textile Structures for Composites.” Currently, he participates in and coordinates projects funded by the European Commission, Erasmus+, and the Swedish Institute. He is also leading an NCN-funded research project focused on the design of hybrid frequency-selective structures. His international collaborations involve leading European research institutions, including RWTH Aachen University, the University of Borås, the University of Zaragoza, and Kaunas University of Technology.

Cooperation with industry and distinctions

A three-zone woven structure developed by Prof. Barburski has been implemented in industrial production at Wolbrom Conveyor Belt Factory S.A., while Sempertrans Bełchatów has adopted solutions based on his research to optimise conveyor belt manufacturing processes. His biocomposites have also been applied as protective engine covers in firefighting drones, demonstrating their practical potential in advanced engineering applications.

He serves as an expert for the European Commission and for research funding institutions across several European countries. In recognition of his scientific and innovation achievements, he has received numerous distinctions, including the “Leader of Intelligent Development 2025” award, the title of “Scientist of the Year 2024” awarded by the Polish Association of Textile Engineers, the “Scientist of the Future 2023” award, the honorary “Łódzkie Eureka” distinction, and a EUROINVENT Gold Medal.
