Scientific achievements
Professor Damian Batory from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of Lodz University of Technology is a specialist in the synthesis of technical coatings using physical and chemical vapour deposition methods, as well as in the study of friction and wear of materials, in particular low-friction coatings. His academic output includes 74 JCR-listed publications, several book chapters and one academic textbook on the tribological properties of carbon-based coatings.
Research profile and research directions
The Professor’s research profile combines materials engineering and mechanical engineering. His current research interests focus on the application of additive manufacturing techniques in the production and investigation of machine components, optimised using generative design algorithms. These include investigations into the influence of material, microstructure and topological optimisation on efficiency, resistance to wear, galling, pitting and micro-pitting, as well as the dynamics of gears, including two-way gear trains. This work focuses primarily on tribological investigations of real gears, the analysis of dynamic changes in stiffness within the meshing zone, and the use of internal cooling channels to improve efficiency. He has participated in numerous national and international research projects funded by the National Science Centre and the National Centre for Research and Development.
Cooperation with industry and implementation potential
His collaboration with the socio-economic community has resulted in numerous national and international patents. He has co-authored many solutions that have been implemented in industrial practice. These include, amongst others, technologies for modifying the surfaces of medical implants, as well as accelerated durability testing of large vehicles, carried out using a road simulator. For many years, he has led the work of a team conducting research in collaboration with the French automotive group Stellantis. He has also led research projects commissioned by AIRBUS HELICOPTERS Polska on several occasions.
Distinction recognition by the scientific community
For his scientific work, Professor Batory received an honour and an award at an international inventions fair. He was a member of the team honoured with the SIEMENS Award for particularly valuable scientific research results with practical applications. He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Motor Transport Institute in Warsaw. He also plays an active role on the editorial boards of journals and conferences in the fields of materials engineering and transportation.
