Dr inż. Katarzyna Grzelak-Błaszczyk, the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences, has been awarded a 1.1 million złoty grant from the NCN Opus 23 funding scheme for her research project 'The effect of the combined osmoconcentration and lactic fermentation process on the profile of bioactive components of new varieties of onion in an in-vivo model'. The research will be conducted at the Institute of Food Technology and Analysis and the Institute of Fermentation Technology and Microbiology in collaboration with the scientists from the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Olsztyn. Below, the author of the grant-winning project explains what lies behind its long title.

Tomatoes are one of the most popular vegetables in the world, so optimal growing conditions are of great importance. In view of the increasing demand for edible plants and environmental changes, work in the field of food technology and nutrition is badly needed. Katarzyna Włodarczyk, M.Sc., is conducting her research in this area.

The first edition of the E2TOP program came to a close in mid-February. A group of first-year students selected by the Program Board received a research grant and academic support from tutors. Further inspiration came through tutoring sessions. The Chair of the Program Council, dr hab. inż. Łukasz Szymański, TUL professor, summed the program up:

‘The students who joined the E2TOP program regarded it primarily as an opportunity for rapid development. They also appreciated that it allowed them to learn about different research techniques and develop practical skills during their the laboratory training’.

The week of March 10 – to March 16 is going to be special at Lodz University of Technology and it is going to be all about research. Scientists, doctoral candidates and students will have the opportunity to visit our state-of-the-art laboratories, network, learn about what they are currently working on and find out how the most advanced technologies are developed.

This is the second time the University of Wroclaw will award the Heisig Prize, also known as ‘the Polish Nobel’, to outstanding scientists. The Senate of Lodz University of Technology passed a resolution to endorse prof. Tomasz Kapitaniak's (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering) nomination for the award.

If you have ever wondered how better to motivate schoolchildren and university students to actively engage in their learning, you might be interested in the discussion rounding up the international project led by Lodz University of Technology in partnership with three highly regarded European universities: Universidad de Alcalá in Spain, HTW Saar in Germany, and Universidade de Aveiro in Portugal.

Dr inż. Joanna Grzelczyk of the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences, Lodz University of Technology, with a grant from the National Science Center (NCN), conducted research on the health-promoting compounds in green and roasted coffee beans. The results are very interesting.

Three international certificates: Chemistry Bachelor, Chemistry Euromaster and Chemical Technology Euromaster have been awarded to two fields of study conducted at the Faculty of Chemistry: chemistry (first and second cycle) and chemical technology (second cycle). This is the result of positive accreditation of both fields of study by the European Chemistry Thematic Network (ECTN), which was granted for a maximum period of six years, until 2028.

As many as 7 winning projects promoting science in the area of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) were submitted to the competition of Academic Lodz by students and secondary school students of Lodz University of Technology.

On 19 February 2023, the day of the 550th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus, the World Copernican Congress was inaugurated in Toruń. On that first and most important day of this extraordinary event, apart from the appointment of the members of the Copernican Academy, the Polish Science Gala was held, during which the Awards of the Minister of Education and Science were presented in all of the categories: for outstanding scientific, organizational, implementation, and teaching achievement, as well as for lifetime achievement. Altogether, Minister Przemysław Czarnek presented 66 awards.
