Dr Eng. Bolesław Szadkowski from the Faculty of Chemistry at Lodz University of Technology is a distinguished researcher in dye materials, hybrid pigments, and polymer composites. His scientific output includes 44 publications in the international scientific community and a rich patent portfolio.
Research profile and research directions
His scientific interests focus on designing sustainable materials to replace petroleum-based polymers and developing innovative biopolymer coatings for textiles that enhance health and safety. Among his most significant achievements is the development of an eco-friendly strategy for producing organic-inorganic functional pigments, characterized by their colorimetric and sensory response to pH changes and exceptional resistance to environmental factors. The designed hybrid pH indicators, produced solely from natural raw materials, exhibit clear, reversible allochroic responses across a broad pH range and significantly surpass conventional natural organic dyes in thermal stability, chemical resistance, and durability.
His solutions combine optical, sensory, and functional features, making them relevant for the development of smart packaging, functional textiles, and advanced polymer composites. He has carried out the MINIATURA and SONATA projects, dedicated to eco-friendly dyeing agents and high-stability hybrid pigment structures. These studies support the global trend towards developing sustainable multifunctional colorants.
Dr. Eng. Bolesław Szadkowski actively collaborates internationally, as evidenced by publications with partners from Finland, France, Germany, and Thailand. He is also a co-inventor of numerous patents related to pH indicators, antimicrobial materials, and composites with increased resistance to aging. As a result, his activities have a clear international and implementation dimension.
Recognition and acknowledgement from the scientific community
For his scientific and inventive achievements, he has received numerous awards and distinctions at both the national and international levels. He is the recipient of the Best Graduate Thesis Award granted by the Marshal’s Office of the Lodz Voivodeship for his doctoral dissertation, as well as the Best Doctoral Dissertation Award conferred by the Voivodeship Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Lodz.
