Scientific achievements
Dr Hab. Eng. Adam Sikora, Professor at Lodz University of Technology, from the Faculty of Chemistry, is a specialist in medicinal chemistry, redox biology, and free radical chemistry. His scientific output includes 51 publications listed in the JCR. He is an internationally recognized expert in the biological chemistry of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species and in the development of advanced methods for their selective detection.
Research profile and research directions
His scientific interests focus on the chemistry of biological oxidants, signalling metabolites, and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Professor Sikora conducts research on boronate-based probes as tools for the selective detection of peroxynitrite, the chemistry of nitric oxide (NO) and nitroxyl (HNO). An important area of his work is also the development of new therapeutic strategies targeted to mitochondria.
Among his most significant achievements is the development and patenting of a novel therapeutic strategy using redox-active pyridinium cations targeted to mitochondria. This approach enables the induction of localized oxidative stress in cells, leading to the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation, including drug-resistant cancer cells. These results are important for the development of precise chemical tools and potential anticancer therapies.
Honours and recognition from the scientific community
Dr Hab. Adam Sikora has led and participated in projects funded by the National Science Centre, including SONATA BIS, OPUS, and PRELUDIUM grants. These projects concerned, among others, selective detection of cellular oxidants, biological properties of HNO donors, alternative strategies for replacing sodium nitrite in meat products, and the development of screening methods for identifying xanthine oxidase inhibitors.
His scientific activity has a strong international dimension. He cooperates with the Medical College of Wisconsin in the USA, Aix-Marseille Université in France, and the University of São Paulo in Brazil. He is a member of scientific organizations focused on redox biology and free radicals, a member of the Board of the Polish Radiation Research Society, and an Associate Editor in the Chemical Biology section of Frontiers in Chemistry. In 2019, he received the Scientific Award of the Polish Radiation Research Society. Dr hab. inż. Adam Sikora, prof.
