For many TUL students, tutoring turned out to be a valuable, growth-promoting and rewarding experience. Their participation in the program confirmed to them that they could do more, and that what they did was first and foremost for themselves and allowed them to discover their own potential, to test the boundaries of what their true capability, which often turned out to be much greater than they had expected when they first started in the project.

Dr inż. Katarzyna Grzelak-Błaszczyk, the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Sciences, has been awarded a 1.1 million złoty grant from the NCN Opus 23 funding scheme for her research project 'The effect of the combined osmoconcentration and lactic fermentation process on the profile of bioactive components of new varieties of onion in an in-vivo model'. The research will be conducted at the Institute of Food Technology and Analysis and the Institute of Fermentation Technology and Microbiology in collaboration with the scientists from the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Olsztyn. Below, the author of the grant-winning project explains what lies behind its long title.

The first edition of the E2TOP program came to a close in mid-February. A group of first-year students selected by the Program Board received a research grant and academic support from tutors. Further inspiration came through tutoring sessions. The Chair of the Program Council, dr hab. inż. Łukasz Szymański, TUL professor, summed the program up:

‘The students who joined the E2TOP program regarded it primarily as an opportunity for rapid development. They also appreciated that it allowed them to learn about different research techniques and develop practical skills during their the laboratory training’.

On 19 February 2023, the day of the 550th anniversary of the birth of Nicolaus Copernicus, the World Copernican Congress was inaugurated in Toruń. On that first and most important day of this extraordinary event, apart from the appointment of the members of the Copernican Academy, the Polish Science Gala was held, during which the Awards of the Minister of Education and Science were presented in all of the categories: for outstanding scientific, organizational, implementation, and teaching achievement, as well as for lifetime achievement. Altogether, Minister Przemysław Czarnek presented 66 awards.

The Central Institute for Labour Protection – National Research Institute (CIOP-PIB) has developed a prototype of protective clothing that actively cools the body down, designed for people working in hot environments, i.e. workers exposed to excessive heat causing the body to overheat. Lodz University of Technology contributed to this innovative solution.

For a number of years now, dr Jacek Stańdo, TUL professor, has been interested in researching the popularity of different search queries with the aid of Google Trends. One of his recent studies conducted with application of the tool has gained international recognition. The article 'The COVID-19 pandemic and the interest in prayer and spirituality in Poland according to Google Trends data in the context of the mediatisation of religion processes' was listed in 2022 in the top 10 of Digital Religion Research publications.

HECATE is a brave and ambitious EU project and one of which Lodz University of Technology will be a part. The EUR 40 million project is coordinated by Collins Aerospace, with aviation industry strongly represented in the consortium of 37 partners from 11 countries. The industry aims for climate neutrality by 2050, and the key to success is the development of small regional hybrid-electric aircraft. That is the focal point of the undertaking: to develop new technologies for supplying electricity. The acronym HECATE is derived from the words Hybrid-ElectriC regional Aircraft distribution Technologies.

There is no doubt that the 180-year-old Oak Fabrykant, which was announced the Tree of the Year in the 2022 Polish edition of the contest organized by Klub Gaya, rules supreme in the park located on TUL campus. This month, however, the oak from Łódź is vying with another 15 trees across Europe for the title of the 2023 European Tree of the Year.
