Scientific achievements

Dr Eng. Joanna Grzelczyk from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Science at Lodz University of Technology is a distinguished researcher in food technology and nutrition. Her scientific output includes 45 publications in the international scientific community, as well as patents and patent applications.

Research profile and research directions

Her scientific interests encompass the design of functional foods, the assessment of the bioavailability of bioactive compounds, and the development of edible and biodegradable packaging and dishes from agri-food industry waste materials. Dr. Grzelczyk’s greatest scientific achievement was the development of packaging and dishes from plant-based raw materials derived from agri-food industry waste, characterized by high durability in contact with food, suitability for both solid and liquid forms, and full biodegradability. The developed packaging has been patented and further developed within the Lider XV project. As part of the PRELUDIUM NCN project, Dr Grzelczyk analyzed the bioavailability and health-promoting properties of hydroxycinnamic acids in coffee beans. These studies align with the global trend of combining nutraceuticals, functional foods, and a circular economy. The solutions she has developed have clear implementation potential and health benefits.

Recognition and academic honours

She has been repeatedly awarded for her scientific activity. She is a laureate of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education scholarship for outstanding young scientists, a recipient of the Polish Academy of Sciences award for young researchers working in the Łódź Voivodeship, and secured second place in the “Eureka! DGP – Discover Polish Inventions” competition. She is also a co-inventor of five patents and additional patent applications.

Dr Grzelczyk actively participates in the scientific community. She is a member of the Food Technology and Nutrition Discipline Council. She completed a scientific internship at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She has participated in numerous national and international conferences and has conducted expert assessments, research, and development work commissioned by public institutions and entrepreneurs.
