This painful condition affects more than 20 per cent of the entire population, not just the human population. It usually ends with surgery or joint implantation. Researchers from Lodz University of Technology, together with medics, are developing an innovative method of treating it. Assoc. Prof. Marcin Kozanecki, from the Department of Molecular Physics at the Faculty of Chemistry, head of the OPUS project, explains the method.

The Polish Patent Office has published the 2021 Report. Lodz University of Technology continues to rank second in Poland, with 121 domestic and foreign patents granted. First place in the ranking went to Lublin University of Technology, with 136 patents and third place to Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences, which filed 118 patents.

The iLumen European Solar Challenge competition in Belgium at Circuit Zolder proved once again lucky for the students of Lodz Solar Team from Lodz University of Technology. During the competition, their Eagle Two car circumnavigated the track 140 times on a single charge, scoring the second for the distance covered.

Lodz University of Technology, in a consortium with business partners from Poland and Turkey, will develop a household wind turbine capable of cooperation and integration with other renewable energy sources. The National Centre for Research and Development and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey have granted more than €300,000 for the research.

The appearance of pathogenic nucleosides in mitochondrial RNA molecules can cause severe dysfunction of mitochondria, which are the energy centres of our cells. Their damage gives rise to symptoms of hypertension, type 2 diabetes and Leber hereditary neuropathy of the optic nerve (LHON). Researchers at the Faculty of Chemistry of Lodz University of Technology, under the direction of Assoc. Prof. Grazyna Leszczynska, are looking to identify the cause of these dysfunctions at the molecular level.

Lodz University of Technology is the leader of an EU project from the LIFE Programme to support activities for nature and climate protection and energy transition. The project, coordinated by Professor Volodymyr Mosorov of the Institute of Applied Computer Science at Lodz University of Technology, will be carried out by several European universities, with the support of a Dutch technology company and a Greek research organisation dedicated to promoting disruptive social and business innovations. The budget for the joint tasks is close to €1.5 million.

The game "Bzzz! - Together in Power" won the Best Gameplay category of the Indie Showcase competition at the international Game Access Conference held at the end of May (May 27-28) in Brno (Czech Republic). The DVD Unicorns team - computer science students at the TUL Faculty of Technical Physics, Information Technology and Applied Mathematics - competed against game projects created largely by small and medium-sized companies in the video game industry.
